Delaware County's First African-American WAAC

The young woman pictured at the left is Miss Georgia Lucile Goens. According to a 1942 article in the Muncie Star, Georgia was the "first Muncie colored woman to join the WAAC." The article noted that she had gone to New York the previous year and joined the American Women's Voluntary Service Corps shortly after our country had entered the WW II. She was noted to have returned to duty after visiting her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Cecil M. Goens, who resided in Muncie.
