Volunteers are needed and will be trained on-site.
The Pioneer Cemetery Preservaton Committee of the Delaware
County Historical Society will begin restoration of
Heath Cemetery, located in Salem Township, just west of
5699 Proctor Road.
Markers that date from the 1830's will be unearthed
using preservation methods endorsed by the Department of
Natural Resources, including gravestone cleaning, repairing
broken markers, leveling of leaning markers, and probing for
fallen gravestones. Heath Cemetery contains
many of the early pioneers of Delaware County.
It is hoped that descendants of the Heath and Tomlinson
families can join in restoration efforts.
Local resident, Connie Jackson,
who is active on the committee, is a descendant of George
A. Heath, Civil War veteran who is buried in the Heath
Cemetery. Tom Crawford, Salem Township Trustee,
is working with the Pioneer Cemetery Committee in what is
anticipated to be a two year preservation project.
